Solar Panels vs Heat Pump: Which Should You Install First in Ireland?

Short answer: if your home is well-insulated (BER B3 or better) and you currently heat with oil, the heat pump usually delivers the bigger annual saving. If your home is less well-insulated or you already heat with gas, solar PV typically pays back faster and is easier to do first.

Solar PV — the fast, safe win

A 4 kW solar PV system after the €1,800 SEAI grant typically saves €900–€1,300 a year — a 5–7 year payback. It works on almost any roof, doesn't depend on your BER and creates no disruption to your existing heating system. For most homeowners this is the right first move.

Heat pump — the bigger win if you qualify

A heat pump replacing an oil boiler saves €600–€1,500 a year (and a lot of carbon) but only performs well if your home is insulated to a Heat Loss Indicator of 2 W/m²K or better. We give a fixed price after the free technical assessment, with the €6,500 SEAI grant deducted at source. If you need to upgrade insulation first, we'll quote that too.

The decision tree

• BER A or B, oil heating: do the heat pump first — biggest saving and removes oil entirely
• BER A or B, gas heating: do solar PV first — payback is faster than swapping gas
• BER C or lower: do insulation + solar PV first, heat pump in 2–3 years

Can you do both?

Yes — and they're highly complementary. A 6 kW solar array typically supplies 25–35% of a heat pump's annual electricity for free. Many homeowners stage it: solar + battery in year one, heat pump in year two, EV charger in year three. The SEAI grants are not time-limited per house, so you can claim each one as you go.

Bottom line

Most well-insulated Irish homes on oil should start with the heat pump. Everyone else should start with solar PV. Either way, get a free home energy assessment — it tells you exactly what your house needs and in what order.
