
How Many Solar Panels Do I Need in Ireland? (2026 Sizing Guide)
As a rule of thumb, a 3-bed Irish home needs 10–12 solar panels (a 4 kW system) to cover most of its daytime electricity use. A 4-bed detached typically needs 14–16 panels (5.5–6 kW), and a home with an EV or heat pump usually justifies 16–20 panels (6–8 kW) to make the most of the SEAI grant and Clean Export Guarantee.
Step 1 — find your annual kWh
Look at the last 12 months of electricity bills (or your ESB Networks smart meter dashboard) and add up the kWh. Average Irish use is about 4,200 kWh per year. Heat pump homes typically use 7,000–9,000 kWh and homes with an EV add 2,500–4,000 kWh.
Step 2 — convert kWh to kWp
In Ireland, every 1 kWp of installed solar generates roughly 900 kWh per year. To cover 100% of consumption on paper, divide annual kWh by 900. For most homes, you want to size the system to about 80–110% of annual usage — beyond that, the export rate (~20c/kWh) makes additional panels less attractive.
Step 3 — convert kWp to number of panels
Modern panels are 430–460 W each. A 4 kW system = 9–10 panels, a 6 kW system = 13–14 panels, an 8 kW system = 18 panels. Each panel needs about 2 m² of roof, so a 4 kW array fits on roughly 20 m² of unshaded south, east or west facing roof.

Don't forget the SEAI grant cap
The SEAI Solar PV grant is €700/kWp for the first 2 kW and €200/kWp for the next 2 kW, capped at €1,800 (4 kW). Systems above 4 kW are still worth it but the marginal panels do not attract grant funding — many homeowners size to 4 kW for maximum grant per euro spent, then add a second string later if needed.
Bottom line
Pull last year's kWh number, divide by 900, and you have the kW of solar you need. For most Irish homes that lands between 4 kW and 6 kW — comfortably within a standard roof and well-supported by the SEAI grant.
